Issue No. 27

Hello to all the wonderful Ketron users and welcome to issue number 27 of Ketron News and Tips (KNAT).
This issue is targeted for August 1, 2003. The first thing I need to do is apologize for being late. I have been out of town for the past week, just arriving back today and while I did do research (I took my X1 with me) I was not able to put together the entire newsletter. Therefore, you are getting it a few days late, but better late than never, eh? Also I have literally hundreds of emails to work through so if I don't get to you immediately I'll will as soon as I can.
If you have a question to ask or a tip to submit, please let me know at jay@ketronus.com. Also I love your comments so don't hesitate to let me have a response.

New BAND-IN-A-BOX dealer
This is the first 2 weeks that Ketron U.S. has been a dealer and the response has been 100% positive. BIAB works so well with Ketron. My web site is devoted to Ketron and all the highest quality things I can find that work with Ketron products and this is definitely one of those.
The other software that is also from PG Music (the BIAB people) and works perfectly with Ketron products is Power Tracks Pro. This is a sequencing program and as such is perfect for tweaking your MIDI files. Even more BIAB is the perfect companion to Style Works 2000.
So much so that I am offering a software special.
I have several older, yet brand new and fully functional, BIAB versions that I will give FREE, while supplies last, to anyone purchasing any version of Style Works. Once supplies run out I will make a different offer. I do not believe that one can have too many styles.
If you order Style Works Universal, you will receive your choice of the latest BIAB or 50% off of the BIAB MegaPAK. Within the next couple of days this will appear on my Accessories page in my web site.
I will also be offering BIAB at a better discount on the "Secret" page, described above.
All supplies are in stock at the moment.
For my loyal customers who have already purchased Style Works, if you contact me by email regarding the offer I have a special for you as well.

Second Voice
One of the most interesting thing you can do in terms of getting unique sounds is to layer voices. The Ketron units offer two ways to do this after the MS series and one way on the MS . On the MS the way to layer is by way of Programs and on the later series starting with the X1 you can still use programs, but you also have a feature called "Second Voice".
Second voice gives you a way to layer without going to programs. There are default settings which are totally unimaginative and for the most part, useless. However, editing is simple and quick on both the X and SD series. I will be describing the way to do it on the X series and adapting to your particular unit should be fairly easy. One note: this is not as useful to owners of units that do not have the "Right" being driven. Accordion players and guitar players or others who MIDI into the "Right" will still get benefit from this article.
When you have set up the "Second Voice" properly you will see that you can usually free up a lot of the "Programs" because they are simple layers. This gives you a chance to use the "Programs" section for more elaborate settings such as triple or quadruple layers and splits and morphing and on and on.
When setting up your "Second Voice" settings be sure to save often. Otherwise you will lose the settings you worked hard to get. To save, press Save/Enter and then 2nd Voice and then F10 to confirm. Be careful not to hit F9 by accident and reset everything to default.
When you enter the "Second Voice" and press "Edit Second Voice" you should have three things you can do. You can choose which voice to use; you can choose a range of octaves the "Second Voice" will be in; and you can choose the volume the "Second Voice" will sound at.
To choose the voice, simple press the voice selections as normal and if you are properly in the Edit Second Voice mode your selection will be for "Second Voice" and not Main Voice.
To change the octave the "Second Voice" is in use the Cursor or Transpose keys for setting the range you desire.
To set the volume of the "Second Voice" simply use the Value +- keys to change the volume.

Here is an instance where you can use the "Second Voice" to replace a Program. If you notice that the default 5th program is PianoStrings2 you can get almost the exact effect by;
Go to Bank A
Turn on "Second Voice"
Turn on Edit
Select Slow Strings
Set the Volume to 28
Set the Transpose to --

Now you can use that Program slot for something more interesting besides being able to get to the "Second Voice" much faster during performances than you can a Program. This technique will give you two settings for each sound on the Ketron unit.
You can do this for Banks A, B and User.
You can use any sound for "Second Voice" from Banks A, B or User.
If you choose "User" be careful since editing that voice will then change your "Second Voice" as well. It is a good idea to get all your "User Voice" settings in place before using them as "Second Voice" choices in your settings.
With that warning you are free to do any mixing and matching you like. Sometimes you may want to add the same instrument with just a little volume and an octave up to add brightness to the sound. You may wish to add a lush sound to a piano setting with Damp Vibes.
You have 384 sounds to play with and you can use any of those sounds to mix with any of the 384 other sounds.
The possibilities are too high to count.
Also when you use the regular "Octave" key, you will affect the octave of the main instrument but not the octave of the "Second Voice" which gives you additional possibilities for live performance.
"Second Voice" is an extremely powerful tool if you take time to work on the settings and you can get some marvelous textures with this tool.

As you may know, I put out this newsletter free of charge and I hope to continue to do so. However I am not independently wealthy and I am forced to derive an income from somewhere. I am a Ketron dealer and I hope to be able to sell to you, my Ketron friends, the products and accessories that you need. I can promise you that no one will beat my price and still maintain the level of service and support that I try to give. To this end you will be my sponsors in what I hope will be a informative and fruitful endeavor for many years to come.
