Issue No. 19

Hello everyone and welcome to issue number 19 of Ketron News and Tips (KNAT).
This issue is targeted for April 1, 2003. Happy April Fool's Day!

This issue has some cool tips this time. There are some corrections to the answers on the new Operating System for the SD1.

I have gone back to my email folder that I keep unanswered questions in and have pulled a few of the most common to try to solve for this issue.

More about the 4.0 release(with corrections)

Ok, the first thing that I have got to say is that while my upgrade is working perfectly, several of you are having some problems. First and foremost, you must know for sure that you got an uncorrupted download. When computers send packets of information across the internet, any kind of digital "noise" or brief interruption or in many, many cases spyware and virus condition can cause portions of the information to be lost or distorted. If you are on dial-up instead of high speed internet access, this causes even more problems.

Of course, when I say working perfectly, I am referring to a clean download and install and not the "bugs" that Ketron will surely have worked out shortly. Overall I am extremely happy and will keep 4.0 on my SD1 and look forward to 4.1.

Now for those of you who want to revert to the 3.0 OS here are the direction that AJ posted in the Solton Club emails. Here is his email in its entirety.

Please note that below is the REVISED solution from AJ and supercedes the posting in the last issue.

Team,

,

Over all, I am glad that most of you are enjoying OS4.0 for the SD1 from Ketron. There have been some, however that have wanted to use the new OS with eg. the older sound settings. This capability will soon be available on our website.

Currently, these are your 2 options:

* Use 4.0 with the new 4.0 sounds.
* Use 3.0c or later with the older sounds.

If you have at any point installed 4.0 and want to re-install 3.0c or later, please do not forget to also install the following files from your HD FOLDER-90 Reload:-

* -Firm0000.snd

* -FLASH086.pcm (All of these from the folder should be loaded).

(Note however that you will still have the 'noise' in the Electric Pianos and Organ sounds).

Due to FLASH format size, the FLASH memory is always re-formatted when you change from 4.0 to any other OS or from any other OS to 4.0. In each case, you will have to reload the FLASH styles (if older than 4.0, use the styles in the Folder 90 -Reload, else use the newly created folder STANDARD). The styles must match the OS!

Sorry for any confusion previous post might have caused.

Thanks,

AJ

Volume control on MIDIs
A fair number of people have asked about how to control the volume of the tracks with the volume pedal when you are playing a Standard Midi File. The setting is under Utilities which is the F3 button when you are in the split or "normal" screen. To get to this screen you can always press "Exit" until it come up no matter where you may be otherwise.
The setting in the "Utility" page is in different locations for different modules. Look for "Song Expr" and set it to ON or YES depending on your unit. In some units this is on page 1 and some it is on page 2.
When this is set to ON the volume control will control the song volume as well as the styles volume.
Happy Voluming!!

Dry on Stop
This is a great feature. Use it!
There are few things as annoying as going to hear a performer or group who is normally doing a good job of entertaining and they never turn off the vocal effects! This really destroys the rapport that the entertainer would be having with their audience. There is a feature on Ketron instruments from the X1 forward that will automatically turn off the mic reverb when the patterns stop and will go back on when the music commences. Of course, you have to be using the mic input on the unit or that feature doesn't work.
This is found under Utilities/Micro on the X series and SD1, but on the more recent models XD, Vega etc., it will be found under Effects - F2 and then Micro.
Try "Dry on Stop" and let the unit do your work for you.
Happy Effecting!!!

A little tip for guitar players
For those guitar players or any others who use the 13 note MIDI pedalboard along with the Vol/Tonality pedal (I knew one jazz fiddle player in Las Vegas that used a setup like this.) take a look at the bottom of the Vol/Tonality pedal and notice the little fold out "wings" that help stability. The thing that I can't find in the literature anywhere is that the left one of those wings slides into a slot on the bottom right side of the 13 note MIDI pedalboard and helps keep the unit from "walking around" while you are trying to play. This setup actually adds stability to both units. If you hadn't already discovered this, take a look.
